Why gap a spark plug? Spark plug gap setting is required for the proper engine operation. Most modern spark plugs have preset electrode gaps. Vintage spark plugs as used on Willys vehicles had multiple applications in differnt vehicles with different engines. The chamption J-8 spark plug installed at the factory in both the four and six cylinder engines was also commonly used in lawn mowers and chain saws. These spark plugs are not preset and require gapping before installation.
The spark plug gap dictates the spark magnitude. Even a minor incorrect electrode gap can affect engine performance as the spark plug magnitude may be insufficient to ensure commplete combustion of the air-fuel mixture.
Willys Owner's Manuals and Service Manuals list the proper electrode gaps as well as the service intervals when the gap should be checked. Proper spark plug gap setting is performed with a spark plug gap tool. The correct gap is adjusted by bending the outer ground electrode towards or away from the center electrode. Most spark plug gap tools have electrode benders as part of the tool.
