A FEW GENERATOR INSTALLATION TIPS
All of the generators listed above are interchangeable and can be installed on all L-4-134, F-4-134, L & F 6-161 and L-6-226 engines with either 6-volt or 12-volt systems. The spacing between the tabs on the inside of the front (pulley end) and the rear (commutator end) is more or less the same on all of these generators.
When installing a generator:
First, hold the generator in the general position it will be in to align the three pulleys: generator, water pump and crankshaft. This will determine how the generator pivot bolts will be installed. With the use of flat washers on either side of the pivot bolts an exact lineup can be accomplished. The unthreaded shouldered portion of the pivot bolts use ½” I.D. flat washers and the threaded portion of the pivot bolts use 5/16” I.D. flat washers. The pivot bolts can be installed with the heads facing forward or to the rear of the generator.
Second, when the three pulleys are aligned and the generator loosely mounted on the generator supports, the generator adjusting brace can be properly installed and aligned with the use of flat washers on the generator front (pulley end) and the water pump or front engine plate.
Third, use your appropriate Service Manual to set the correct fan belt deflection. A loose belt will cause the belt to slip on the pulleys, an extremely tight belt will cause excessive wear on the water pump and generator bearings.
Last, unlike an alternator, a functioning generator will not charge the system at engine idle. The voltage output of these generators is not adjustable, voltage adjustment is made at the voltage regulator. Both the generator and its matching voltage regulator must be polarized to prevent damage to either component. These procedures are detailed in your appropriate Service Manual.

This is a Department of the Army Technical Manual dated November 1952, 396 pages, 6" x 9", soft cardstock covers, three hole punched and shrink wrapped.
This manual covers the description of and procedures for the disassembly, inspection, repair, rebuild, and assembly of Auto-Lite generators as used on all Willys Jeep vehicles from 1941 through 1952. Many of these items were installed on Jeep vehicles though 1968. This manual should be used in conjunction with the information contained in the pertinent vehicle operator's manuals and service manuals. TM 9-1825B is the most detailed and informative publication available for the early generator maintenance that we have seen to date.
