This tool is used to remove the tapered rear axle shaft, axle bearing cone and axle bearing cup as an assembly. It is designed to remove the axle shafts from Dana rear axles to include models 23,27,41,44 and 53 as well as the Timken rear axle used on the early Utility Trucks.
The early rear axle shaft puller #C-637 was a simple slide hammer with an adapter that threaded onto the axle shaft. This early tool is notorious for damaging the threads on the axle shafts. Our updated tool uses a heavy duty steel drum and heavy duty nuts and washers to slowly pull the axle shaft from the axle housing.
Our rear axle shaft puller is a complete kit with the steel drum, 1", 7/8" and 3/4" axle nuts, 1", 7/8" and 3/4" grade 8 thick flat washers and grade 8 spacer bolts and nuts.
Once the rear wheel brake parts, brake backing plate and axle shaft bearing retainer have been removed, the drum is slipped over the axle shaft and seated against the axle housing flange. The thick, wide flat washer is installed along with the axle nut and with the use of the correct wrench, the nut is tightened. Usually the axle shaft, bearing cone and cup will pull out with just a few turns of the axle nut.
Tougher jobs may require the use if a second flat washer or even the use of the three spacer bolts and nuts installed in the axle housing flange. We have never encountered an axle shaft that this tool could not remove.
